Hi all, I’m just curious about the skill-based matchmaking system that was removed some time ago. I’ve been playing this game for a few years now on PC and I’ve always found a game perfectly fine. Recently on my main Black Ops 2 account I’ve hardly been able to find a game, and if I do it’s with people who have around 3KD. Now, when I go on my alt which has around 1KD I find games instantly, and with normal skill levels. Even if I play with my friends I can find games, but never on high KD accounts anymore? I seriously doubt the pc team went back to the game just to mess with the matchmaking.
David Vonderhaar made some jokes about skill-based matchmaking in Call of Duty , but then found himself needing to give apologies to several members of Infinity Ward, the developers of Modern Warfare. Skill-based matchmaking has become on of the hottest topics of discussion among the Call of Duty player-base since the release of the Modern Warfare beta back in mid-September. Although Infinity Ward have never confirmed or denied its existence in their title, players are convinced SBMM is very much embedded in the game after several tests were performed by YouTubers and enthusiasts.
It again took centerstage on November 13, when Treyarch’s Studio Design Director David Vonderhaar, one of the most recognizable names in CoD, tweeted about it as a joke. Retweeting a post about the seven-year anniversary of Black Ops 2 release, he tweeted “See. I told you skill-based matchmaking wasn’t evil.
That was what drew me to the League Play options in Black Ops 2. Finally, I could figure out what my skill level was purported to be, and then play some sort of reward system for playing based on your gameplay, as opposed to up with bronze/silver players because of the extremely bad matchmaking.

Black Ops 2 will be the first Call of Duty title to offer a matchmaking system. For the past eight games, there hasn’t been a single Call of Duty title to offer a ranking system which places players in lobbies with other players of similar rank and skill level. Competitive gamers received very little official support from either Infinity Ward or Activision in Modern Warfare 3. Treyarch appears to employ a different philosophy with regards to competitive gaming, and provided heavy support for competitive gaming through MLG in Black Ops.
Given what we’ve seen in the end of the recently released multiplayer trailer of Black Ops 2, we can easily expect them to do the same with the upcoming game. We have reason to believe that Treyarch has been in talks with the professional gaming community, and one of them in particular—Scump of Pro Team Optic—may have accidentally disclosed information about the company’s plans with Black Ops 2 through one of his recent commentary videos. In the video, Scump refers to a true-skill matchmaking system in Black Ops 2, which is similar to what’s in the Halo and Starcraft 2 games.
This matchmaking system determines your rank based on who you play against rather than the kills you get against average players. According to Scump, the studio has plans to implement a “League” system similar to the one in Starcraft 2. How it works is that winning matches will place you into a certain league which you can move up and down in depending on who you play against and how well you perform.
Finally, Scump says that the skill system will typically revolve around 4v4 battles, with players of similar skill level matched up against each other. It’s hard to say whether Scump is talking about what he knows to be fact, but it’s hard to deny that the things he’s saying make a whole lot of sense.
A big trend I’ve been noticing lately is the claim that they just recently added a very strong Skill Based Matchmaking algorithm into CoD when AW came out. Connection would suffer horribly if it was skill based matchmaking. AW cd into a computers disk. COD AW did skill based matchmaking and look how that. The top 20 posts on the BO3 subreddit are about skill.
I feel like in previous CODs the matchmaking was based on playing time, is that VERY few people disagree with the system currently in BO2.
The word is finally out. After all the denial from Vahn and Treyarch, Vahn finally decided to come clean. BO2 is not harder, you’re not being lag comped, and you didn’t get worse at COD overnight. In fact, BO2 is actually a really easy game, but that’s until they added skill based matchmaking. Unlike the older COD’s that were based on ping and latency, finding others within your locale to get the best connections and lobbies, BO2 has two levels of matchmaking.
Let’s set aside how ridiculous and how arbitrary these numbers can become with people’s inflated KD’s and such. The real problem comes when you’re someone who usually runs a full party. This means every time you decide to play solo, good luck. You’re going to need to always play with a full party, or get ready to get stomped on.
It’s not been accused of experience levels has a quality matchmaking in the game, weapons and how the devs at. Team fortress 2 adds skill-based matchmaking could level of pubg update coming next two by closely. And just takes people to go, call of mmr.
